Forgive if this was recently covered, but I'm trying to
get a project out this weekend. PPT came with the Office
2000 set, and Word, Excel are not affected. Operating on
Win ME, never upgraded Office since it was installed.

Error message when trying to open any PPT file is:

"Powerpoint found an error it can't correct. You should
save presentations, quit, and then restart Powerpoint."

I can only exit PPT via ctl/alt/del. Rebooting, etc does
nothing. Any thoughts? Can I just re-install PPT from the
Office disc (which I think I can find)?

Thanks in advance!

Before you resort to searching for those CDs, try the following:

1. Find and delete the *.PCB file on your system. This is the PPT
toolbar, and it will recreate itself when you restart PPT. Note that
you'll lose any customizations you've made to your PPT toolbars.

2. Find all *.PPA files on your system and rename them to *.OLD *.PPA
files are PPT addins. After renaming, see if PPT starts. If it does, you
can close PPT and re-rename <g> one *.OLD file back to *.PPA. Then
restart PPT again. If it starts okay, you can continue until you can
figure out which PPA is causing ppt to not start.

Echo's suggestions are good 'uns. But let me ask this before you do alla
that stuff:

Can you start PPT on its own w/o opening a file? Does it then act up when
you open a PPT file? If so, it's likely not a problem with add-ins.

In that case, try this schtuff:

PowerPoint found an error that it can't correct

No luck using either of your workarounds. Same error
message. I'll go ahead and re-name them bacl to *.ppa from
*.old. Any other thoughts? Thanks, Echo S.

I'd try the stuff in the link Steve provided. And I do apologize for not
including that in my original post. Dunno *what* I was thinking!

Steve-

I can indeed open PPT to "Presentation 1," but anything I
try to do (even tring to close out of PPT) results in the
same error message.

I went to your suggested page, disabled the NAV plug-in
(yup, I run Norton), etc., but no luck. Same error message.

I also tried Echo's solution, to no avail (sob, sniff).

Any other thoughts?

Thanks, Steve.

Stu,
Have you tried running a detect and repair? Did it change anything?

Stu,

Ditto Kathy's Detect and Repair suggestion, and I'd also like to make sure
you have a printer driver installed locally and set as default.

If none of that helps and you have a deadline staring you in the face, I'd
back up anything you've gotten done so far, then uninstall Office, run a
registry cleaner, then reinstall.

When I try to, I get the same error message. It will not
allow me to even close out, let alone open anything. I'll
go the re-install route.

Thanks for the assist.
