I've had Power Point '97 for quite a while but only
recently started working with it. Now that I have, I would
like to add two presentations or shows to my web site. Does
it make any difference whether I upload a .pps or .ppt
version of the file? Do both formats require the person who
is viewing the file to have PowerPoint installed on his/her
computer? I'm trying to make this accessible to as many of
my site visitors as possible. So I was hoping that the .pps
version might be viewable even without Power Point.

Thanks for any help or advice you can offer.

Hi,
my site visitors as possible. So I was hoping that the .pps
version might be viewable even without Power Point.

The best would be to add a PDF version of the slides in any case. This is
known to be readable be really every computer. I think this is not the
case for .pps

PDF files can be generated with the Acrobat Distiller which is NOT free,
unfortunately.

If you want a free PDF creator, use this:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/pdfcreator/
It installs a printer driver that prints the PDF slides to a file.

After installing PDF Creator, go to File->Print ans choose PDFCreator as
the printer. It then asks you for the file name and outputs the PDF format
to that file

..pps and .ppt are basically the same. .pps opens in the slideshow mode, and .ppt opens in the edit mode. The person viewing will have to have either the full version of PowerPoint, or the PowerPoint viewer installed on their system. If they have the viewer installed, then everything opens in the Slideshow mode, regardless of the file extension. You could of course, from within PowerPoint 97 publish your presentations as web pages, then all that is required to view them is the web browser like IE or Netscape.
