Hello -
I've been making copies of .ppt shows on CD's - saving them first as .pps
and sometimes
making them autoplay. My question - several computers that I've tested them
on open the
shows in "Edit" mode. I thought that wasn't supposed to be the case with
..pps - what have I missed?

Tired of having to make a special label on cover stating, "Press F5 key
IF..." !

Would appreciate your help,
LJK

If you go into the properties of the file (from windows explorer, not PPT).
What does it say next to "Type of File"?
1. Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation (Presentation = a .ppt file that will
open in edit mode)
2. Microsoft PowerPoint Show (Show = a .pps file that will open in show
mode)
If it is not a "show," open in PPT and do as save as and choose 'ppt show'
from the dropdown list.

You have no control over other systems and it sounds like the file
association for PPS has been tampered with. On most systems with PowerPoint
installed, if you go to Windows Explorer > Tools > File Types and select PPS
in the list and then click on Advanced, you will see Show in bold and if you
select it and click on Edit you should see something like "C:\Program
Files\Microsoft Office 2002\Office10\POWERPNT.EXE" /s "%1" in the box for
Application used to perform action. That /s is the important parameter!
Now if you do the same on one of the trouble systems, there will be
something different. Either "Show" won't be in the list, or it won't be in
bold. The bold text means that is the default behavior.

THANK-YOU!
I will check out the other systems (that I can) to see if that's the issue.

Meantime, for the ones I've no control over: is there no option but to
include documentation for users to go ahead and hit F5?
(Doesn't sound that way...)

- Much appreciated,
LJK

You could be a little fancy.

Add a new first slide to the presentation. Add text that says something to
the effect of "If you can read this then your system is not configured
correctly." and give them instructions (still on the first slide) on how to
fix it or contact you. Then, hide this slide. -- Select slide 1 |
SlideShow Setup | Hide Slide --

If their system opens the pps file as a show, the hidden slide will not be
displayed. If their system opens the presentation up in edit mode, then
they will see this slide.

Thanks for this wonderful suggestion!

One question:
After making the text on the new slide, I select "Hide This Slide" - yet it
will show up if it opens in .ppt instead of .pps?

Can't wait to try it!

You are correct, if the first slide is hidden, then the show actually begins
on slide 2.

It will show up as the first slide to be edited on the edit (normal)
screen -- if PowerPoint opens the PPS file incorrectly. This type of
association corruption (right program, wrong action) happens from time to
time and is fairly easy to correct. However, this method (hidden first
slide) will not work if the PPS files become associated with an entirely
different program.

A hidden first slide will not be seen in the correctly opened PPS show.
