PPS files that don't need PP or PPViewer

For PowerPoint97, is there a way to create a PPS file that
has a (or the) PowerPoint viewer "built-in" so that folks
without PowerPoint or PPTViewer can view the slide show??
The resulting file should not be significantly greater
than the PPS file or it will be very difficult to e-mail
it to my friends.

Thanks, Joe 20040504

Not really.

You can include a link to the PPT Viewer for your friends to download in
case they don't have PPT.

Or you can do a Pack and Go and include the Viewer, then unpack the file to
your harddrive and use the following technique to create an EXE:
http://www.indezine.com/products/powerpoint/pp2003/ppt2exe.html

Or you can Pack and Go and include the Viewer, but you'd have to send to
your friends *both* of the files that Pack and Go creates. And they'll have
to save *both* of those to their harddrive in the same folder and then
unpack the file. It's a lot of hassle on their end. Much easier to just give
them a link to download and install the Viewer.

Publish it to a web page is an option

Powerpoint to Exe can do that easily.
It would convert your powerpoint (ppt or pps) to a stand alone exe
file that would play without the need for the user to download the
viewer or have Office installed. The other suggestions made such as
pack and go or a self extracting file would work too but in all these
cases it may make the file size too big for your needs.
If possibe, a good alternative to emailing would be to make the
powerpoint show available for download. Then you just need to email
out a download link.

I presume from the details in your note that saving the
ppt file as html cannot be done from within PowerPoint97,
correct?? But are there file converters to do the same
thing, ie, convert the ppt97 file to html by operating on
the ppt97 file??

[TOP ISSUE - Are you having difficulty opening presentations in PPT 2003
that you just created in PPT 2003? -

Hello,

For the native (full fidelity) PowerPoint slide show format (*.ppt, *.pps)
the recipient will still have to have some kind of application which knows
how to open/view the slide show file (PowerPoint or the PowerPoint Viewer).
If the recipients don't have PowerPoint or the PowerPoint Viewer the
Viewer can be downloaded from the internet.

However, everybody (?) has a web browser on their computer, so a workaround
(for the broken links to supporting files scenario) is to distribute your
presentations as single file web pages (MHTML:). This is a feature of both
PowerPoint 2002 and PowerPoint 2003. Now you have a single file that can be
sent which, when the recipient opens from e-mail or Windows, will display
an HTML version of the PowerPoint slide show in the default browser for
that system. Of course there are limitations and differences between
PowerPoint HTML presentation slide shows and native *.ppt/*.pps
presentation slide shows viewed using PowerPoint. If, however, the
recipient opens the MHTML file using PowerPoint (2002 or 2003), the show
will display in full native fidelity. So, with this workaround you get the
benefits of single-file distribution, but you don't get the "automatically
start in slide show mode" experience and there is loss of fidelity if
viewed in a web browser (only you can decide, for your presentations,
whether the benefits offset the disadvantages).

If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that PowerPoint should
provide a way of distributing a presentation (with all it's supporting
content) as a single file which, can be viewed in it's full fidelity, with
an option to start as slide show, and without permanently
installing/copying any software on the destination computer (whew!!!),
don't forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft
at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

It's VERY important that, for EACH wish, you describe in detail, WHY it is
important TO YOU that your product suggestion be implemented. A good wish
submssion includes WHAT scenario, work-flow, or end- result is blocked by
not having a specific feature, HOW MUCH time and effort ($$$) is spent
working around a specific limitation of the current product, etc. Remember
that Microsoft receives THOUSANDS of product suggestions every day and we
read each one but, in any given product development cycle, there are ONLY
sufficient resources to address the ones that are MOST IMPORTANT to our
customers so take the extra time to state your case as CLEARLY and
COMPLETELY as possible so that we can FEEL YOUR PAIN.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions).

PowerPoint 97 can save to HTML via a different method but it can't create the
single-file version of HTML that John describes and doesn't preserve as many of
the original PPT features as newer versions of PPT do.

Do you know someone with a later version of PPT who could open and convert your
presentation to MHT for you?

When you do the Pack and Go and then unpack the files, the music file should
be included in the unpacked files and the links to the music should be
resolved -- in other words, use the Pack and Go technique, and your music
should work.

Then do the PPT2EXE technique to wrap up all the unpacked files
(presentation, music, and all the PPT Viewer files/dlls) for distribution.

Vic does a nice job with his EXE thing. It may be worth your while to just
use that.
