I had to swich over to a PPPOE DSL setup from using an older Cisco DSL
router a few weeks ago. I have my computer and wifes hooked through a
belkin four port router. The router is attached to my computer and I have it
set up for PPPOE. My wife's computer is then hooked to the belkin router. I
can access the web and email from my computer and the LAN but nothing else.
My computer cannot connect to anything else, like downloading virus
signitures or newsgroups. I am at my wife's computer right now and it has
access to everything. There's got to be a simple setting that got messed up
somewhere. I do not have a pppoe dialup created. We are both using WinXP
home.

Thanks

Have a look at your DNS & Gateway setting.
Make sure it has your router IP filled in.

PPPoE .. so Belkin router + another modem connected via Ethernet ?
as PPPoE is PPP over Ethernet .. which sometimes mean .. the modem is not
built into the router.
If its inbuilt, its normally PPPoA [PPP over ATM]

They are filled in automatically. I now have a DSL modem attached with a
network cable to the Wan port on the Belkin. My computer is attached to the
belkin with a network cable as is my wifes.

It is PPPoE

But why can I access the web and email but not anything else, since my wife
can?

Well, hell. I am now at my computer and it is working. I found out that
ZoneAlarm was running its vector engine in the background. I thought I had
shut the stupid thing down when I stopped running it on the tray and I had
gone to the hardware firewall. Oh, well. Now it is gone and I can work the
internet.
