A lot of this depends on the capability of your DVD player. Some players
can handle a DVD which is just a directory of JPEG images (and the player
itself provides a menu for viewing them), so you could export your slides
as JPEG images (no animation of course) and burn them to CD. However, if
you want to use the DVD-Video capability of your DVD player you would have
to convert your slide show to a movie first and then use DVD authoring
tools to combine the movie with various DVD-Video elements (menus, chapter
definitions, etc.).
PowerPoint , by itself, does not have the built-in ability to save
presentations as video files or other video formats such as DVD-Video and,
even if it did, there would be significant loss of interactivity (because
DVD-Video and PowerPoint slide show have very different capabilities in
this area) and loss of visual fidelity (DVD-Video resolution is less than
typical computer display resolution and most television will not render
colors the same way that a computer display will).
Although there have been some requests, made directly to Microsoft, for the
ability to export PowerPoint presentations to DVD, it's not always clear,
from the suggestion submissions, which of the DVD formats are desired; what
"problem" does saving as DVD solve for each customer; and, given the
limitations of DVD-Video (and other movie formats) when compared to the
fidelity of a native PowerPoint slide show, what slide show
capabilities/quality customers are willing to give up in order to get the
perceived benefits of DVD output.
So, if the ability save presentations to DVD-Video (even with unavoidable
loss of some interactivity capabilities), directly from within PowerPoint,
is important to you (or anyone else reading this message), or if there are
specific features of PowerPoint slide show distribution that you would like
to see (which might eliminate the need to save presentations as DVD-Video),
don't forget to send your feedback (in YOUR OWN WORDS, please) to Microsoft

What I have done similar in the past is use Photodex's ProShow Gold
(www.photodex.com) to create an MPG movie file that will play in Windows
Media Player or can be imported into a DVD authoring package. ProShow will
also create VideoCD and other formats, but I have not tested those and they
may or may not be compatible with your DVD player.
Basically you have PowerPoint output a folder of JPG slides, then ProShow
will read that entire folder and create a movie from it. The downside is
you must re-create the slide timings in ProShow and add inter-frame
animations again. ProShow has quite an extensive list of animations and
effects. Like the other poster said, you will also lose some image and text
quality, that is the nature of MPEG video compression...
