I'm trying to edit the background of all the slides in a
presentation using Powerpoint v.X. I'd like to have a .jpg
image be the background for all slides, but when I choose
Fill Effects and Picture from the Format Background option,
and I click on Choose to select my .jpg file Powerpoint
will unexpectedly quit. This happens whether it's a new
presentation or an existing one, and it also seems to
happen when I try to insert a picture from file into a slide.

Help! I need to give this presentation in two days!

Sounds like you're using the Mac version .. you might want to post your
question in microsoft.public.mac.office.powerpoint as well - this is the
Windows PPT newsgroup.

But in the meanwhile, I'd open the JPG in an image editing program
(Photoshop or whatever you've got handy) and save as PNG, then try inserting
that into PPT.

One thing to add to Steve's solution. If you are familiar with using the
image editing program, you may want to check the image resolution. You may
be able to resample the image down to 96dpi. If so, save the image to a new
file name and resample it down and try importing into PP. Hopefully there
wont be any degredation of image clarity and it should help keep your PP
file size down.
