Hi,

On one PC on our network, powerpoint doesn't come up with the box that says
a shared file is already in use, instead it just opens it as read only.

How can I fix this???

(FYI office 2000 on win98SE)

If a PC crashes while a file's open on the network, the server may never get
around to turning loose of it. If you know which PC caused the problem, it
might be enough to have it open the file then close it.

On the other hand, if it's an NT server, the admin can take the file out of
use. There are probably similar utilities for other network servers.

You have mis-interpreted what I mean.

Lets say I have 3 PC's on a network.

PC1 opens file1.ppt and keeps it open.

PC2 tries to open file1.ppt. PP reports: File in use, open read only? (or
similar)

PC3 tries to open file1.ppt. It does so apparently successfully. Then you
work on it, and try and save it, ONLY THEN do you notice in the title bar
[READ ONLY].

I want to make PC3 report file open like PC2 does.

You're right, I misinterpreted your post. Sorry ... I just checked this
here with a variety of different computers/Win versions/PPT versions. Had
up to four copies of the same PPT file open at once but couldn't replicate
the same behavior you described, so I'm at a loss for suggestions.
