PP 2003 Unable to Open

Hi.

I'm running PP 2003. I'm pretty experienced at creating new presentations
and all, but I have weird issue I have never seen.

I work off a network. I recently got a new PC (both systems running 2003).
Some of the PP files I created on my old PC won't open on my new PC. If I'm
not mistaken, they are all free .pps training files from Osha. They operated
just fine on my old PC, but now I get the following msg:

"You are attempting to open a file type that is blocked by your registry
policy settings" This happens if I try to download the file again from
Osha's training site too.

Per the IT guy, I would have the same user rights/access/security settings
and updates as my old PC, because the updates are loaded by our corporate
office. One file I saved & updated on my old PC that no longer opens on my
new PC, can be opened by the IT guy when I email it to him (same network).

Any thoughts or ideas? Is there anything that could be set differently on
my new PC?

The settings may be controlled by your network folks who are setting Group
Policies for the whole network as opposed to any local PC setting. It's
unlikely the IT Guy's settings would be the same as yours. Have you tried
having another worker bee open the files?

BTW, are you in the midst of an upgrade to Office 2007 at your organization?
This could also might explain it if the Network folks are working on group
policies for 2007.
 
Yes, our corp office controls the group policies and updates, but they do
this sytem wide. I sent the file to another worker bee, and he could open
the file just fine. It's mine PC. What could be different on my new XP,
when everything is controlled by our corporate IT department?

Our local IT guy said the corp office is looking into 2007 updates, but
anything applied goes over the complete network.
 
Did you maybe install service pack 3 for Office 2003? I think it blocks some
file types -- PPT 95 specifically comes to mind. If the OSHA files were
saved as a PPT 95 file type, that, combined with SP3, could be the issue.

Check Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs to see if Office 2003 SP3 is
listed. (You may need to check the "show updates" box at the top of that
dialog box.)

As a test, have the other workerbee open the file then do File, Save As and
*explicitly* choose File Type: Presentation (*.PPT) rather than whatever's offered
and give the file a new name. See if you can open that.

for most of my life and I never realized that check box was under add/remove
programs!

I emailed a file and asked the receipient to save as a .ppt and email it
back. Low and behold, the file opened. Per our IT guy, I have the only PC
in the place with this update (lucky me!). He said he will probably have to
remove Office, do a registry clean on my PC then re-install without the
Office SP3, unless you think this is an issue that MS is currently working on
to fix??

I think you should try uninstalling SP3 from Add-Remove programs, and if
that doesn't fix it, then have him do the other hoop-jumping with
uninstalling and cleaning the registry. (But he's probably right. The
uninstall probably won't change the registry keys back.)

I don't know if MS is working on it, but before going through all the hassle of
uninstalling and resinstalling everything, try (or have the IT guy try) uninstalling the
SP3 update (good job, finding it in add/remove, by the way).

If it works, great. It's quick.

there scroll down and find the Powerpoint link. I've tried it, it actually

Thanks for posting the fix to the registry block of old power point files.
The registry fix in the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/938810 worked for me
also, just like a charm.
