Our blank master template has a right margin of a different color on each
page, probably each section has its own color.

I am combining three presentations into this one template. how do i change
the master template to have a different color in that margin every 30 pages
or so? I knowhow to change the master overall so that it impacts every page
but this is a little different.

The only way I'm familiar with solving this issue is by creating
multiple master slides. When in Slide Master view, you may add slides
and modify each one to have a different margin color. 30 different
colors = 30 different master slides.

Once the Master Slides are created and you return to your presentation,
all of the available master slides will be listed in the Task Pane
under the Slide Design panel. If you hover over any one of those
designs, you are presented with a small drop-down arrow allowing you to
apply that master to either the Selected Slides or All Slides within
the presentation.

Assuming that your version supports multiple templates (XP on) then you can
either do as kfogle says or create the three presentations with different
versions of the master and then combine them with insert slides from files
(choose keep source formatting)

Did that answer the question / help?

Yes, it does - thanks. Where do I find the option "keep source formatting",
though?
