PP 2003 crashes on slide show

Anybody else having this problem? I can rarely get through a slide
show without PP crashing. I'm using the current version (so sez
officeupdate.com), on a new PC with plenty of RAM (2GB).
 
Can you define "crash"? Do you get a message? What is the message and at
what point does it occur?
 
I get the standard "this program has experienced an error and must
close" dialog box, along with a request to send information about the
problem to Microsoft, which I always do.
 
Try several presentations. Does it happen with each? For a particular
presentation, does it always happen at the same spot? If so, it might be
that there is something on the current slide or the slides that follow that
is causing the problem. A study of the slides might provide a clue.

I would probably try the following, one at a time, to see if one helps:
1. Boot into Windows Safe Mode and run the presentation. Does it still
happen?
2. Run Detect and Repair.
3. Update the video card driver.
4. Update DivX
5. Do basic maintenance - - clean out the Temp folder, defrag the hard
drive.
6. Disable anti-virus software.

Did you know that you can automatically send a crash Microsoft nearly any
time an Office 2002 or Office System 2003 application crashes?

When the crash occurs a crash reporting dialog will appear with a message
that begins something like: "Microsoft Office <application> has encountered
a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

When this occurs:

1) Click on "What data does this report contain?
2) Note down the following information:

* AppName:
* AppVer:
* AppStamp:
* ModName:
* ModVer:
* ModStamp:
* fDebug:
* Offset:

3) There might also be a "bucket" number. If so, note down that number as
well.
3) Click "Close"
4) Click "Send Error Report

If you post the information noted in steps 2 and 3 above to this newsgroup
I might be able to verify whether or not this is already a known issue and,
if it's known, possibly a way to avoid or fix the problem in the future.

Thanks for the suggestion, John. I tried this on several crashes, but
unfortunately, there was no "bucket" number in the dialog, just the other
fields you list.

No. Some are fine, others crash on slide show. There's nothing
especially unusual about the ones that crash; they're just mostly text &
autoshapes.

No, it can happen on virtually any slide. One thing I have noticed,
though, is that flipping through a slide show quickly is more likely to
provoke a crash than advancing it slowly.

No, it's fine then. Which led me to something else that might be a
factor. I'm running two monitors. I run PP on my CRT, but the slide show
appears on my LCD. That's the configuration I run when I get the crashes.
I tried dragging the main PP window over to my LCD and running both the
application and the slide show on the LCD, and it doesn't crash. (I'm not
sure how to run both on my CRT; the slide show always opens on my LCD). So
maybe it has to do with video displays/drivers. I'll continue through your
list and see what else I find.
 
Yep, I suspect your video driver needs to be updated. To run the Slide Show
on the same monitor as the Normal view, go to Slide Show > Set Up Show and
set the slide show to display on the Primary monitor or Secondary monitor,
which ever is appropriate.

Go to the website of the manufacturer of your video card and look for a
driver for your version of Windows.

Good idea. I've submitted an MSWish that the crash report tool give the user
the ability to copy this info directly or that it get a button/whatever that
copies the info to the clipboard so the user can paste it directly into the
newsgroup post, email report, whatever.
