I spent hrs loading 183 photos into photo album. Now when I open the file,
all the pix are black and white instead of color.

-What did I do wrong?
-How can I prevent this in future?
-Can I get the color back?

When you run PowerPoint Photo Album there is a box under Picture Options labled
"ALL pictures black and white". I suspect that you may have checked that box
accidentally. I recommend that you do a test by opening a new blank
presentation and running Photo Album again, carefully selecting your options.
Let us know if you can't get color photos.

However, I'm concerned about your comment that you "spent hours" loading the
photos. Photo Album is so simple to run and runs so quickly, that I'm hoping
that your time was spent elsewhere.

Thanks so for your help! I don't recall checking this, but that was the
problem, and by deselecting, all pictures are back in color. Yes, the
"hours" were spent going through hundreds of pictures I took on a trip to
China, narrowing them down for a presesntation.

Followup question - I want to add just a few slides with some facts/figures
about China, using one of the templates. How do I do this without changing
all my photos to the template, which I do not want to do?

You can just add text boxes with the facts and figures in them. That doesn't
require a different template and won't impact the other slides.
