Hello
I'm running Windows XP. For several years I've operated Partition Magic 8 and Boot Magic on this platform.
Suddenly, the boot process won't get past Boot Magic, and returns an "error 8050." The message continues "press any key to continue" but the computer hangs up.
I've tried to reboot from my emergency CD, but with no success.
Thanks for any help you may offer.
Stan

boot using your XP CD and FIXMBR

Thanks Muckshifter.
That seemed to work as far as the stage: "Loading Operating System . . ." It's been hanging there for about 10 minutes. Should it take that long?

Just wondering why you use Boot Magic, do you have two or more operating systems (for instance Win XP/Win 7 or perhaps Win XP/Linux) to choose between when you boot? If not then Boot Magic serves no purpose and will probably only serve to complicate the MBR (Master Boot Record, the part of Windows that starts it up).

Partition Magic 8 itself is good software, despite being around ten years old but Boot Magic was always a bit flakey.

It does sound as if the mbr on your computer is corrupt and although Microsoft offer repair options such as the 'FIXMBR' command Mucks has suggested, in all my years attempting to repair a broken XP install, not once has it ever worked, despite my best efforts.

If that is the case with your system then I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it does seem likely you will have to consider a fresh installation of XP which means probable data loss, depending on how you have things set up.

No it shouldn't ... as my esteemed fellow stated, you may have to bite the bullet and re install ... hopefully your drive is OK and not failing or anything bad.

Thanks for the help. I'm on the road for a week, and will work on this again when I return to my desktop.
I use Boot Magic because I'm still running Accpac Accounting on DOS.
If the boot track on the hard drive is toast, and I reinstall XP or use the opportunity to upgrade to 7, will I be able to see the data on the rest of the drive?
Thanks again.
Stan

I wouldn't count on either method will keep your data, but you have that backed up anyway, right?

Win 7 does have a proficient repair feature that is quite good, however, alway alway alway, backup irreplaceable data. :)

Yes, whew! I just installed a Western Digital portable hard drive and backed up. I also have crucial files copied onto a couple of USBs.
I also just upgraded my laptop from Vista to 7, and had to reinstall my programs.
The only dicey part will be to reinstall the Accpac.

A quick check on Windows compatability site shows it is compatable with Windows 7.
Failing that, depending on what version of Windows 7 you have, you could run XP mode.
