Has anyone used PQ Drive Image to copy a Windows XP installation drive
to a new hdd? I'm about to add a couple new SATA drives to my rig, and
want to move my WinXP installation (all of C: on my current drive) over
to the new SATA drive. Are there any potential issues I should be aware
of in advance? I'm particularly concerned about whether this might
break Product Activation, or confuse my device drivers. Thanks,

Byron

Not really a whole lot to know. always make sure you backup your data
before doing anything. if it ask you to activate again try it, if it doesnt
work just call the number and MS can help you over the phone.

DriveImage is not meant to restore an image to a system on which hardware
has been changed. Check the documentation to be certain that it will do
what you desire.

As long as there's no hardware changes being made to your system apart from
adding drives, there's no problem.
As it says, it's an IMAGE - preferably use V.8 if you can.
If you want to temporarily dual-boot, don't try to use PQ Boot Magic, it
doesn't work with XP.

Last I checked, Drive image did not officially support SATA drives. Check
with the PowerQuest support before you commit to these actions.

My own experience with SATA (Seagate 120 Gig drives) is as follows: Acronis
TrueImage will make a backup, but can not restore it. Norton GHOST 2003
will not even see all partition when run in Windows mode. However, GHOST
2003 and even 2002 work fine when run from a DOS floppy. I have not tried
Drive Image.

Assuming that Dive Image works for you, your next challenge will be the HAL
used by XP. There is some chance that you will get a blue screen of death
when you reboot. This is not really a big problem, since it can often be
cured by performing a repair installation of XP. Unfortuantely, a repair
will lose all XP updates. It will not erase persoanl files or most settings
or other (non-system) programs.

On additional caution: If the new drive is larger than 128-137 Gig,
depending on how you define a Gig, then you may need a BIOS update, and you
will need SP-1 for XP, and you will need to enable 48-bit LBA in XP. The
last two would be best done before switching drives.

Yep but Drive Image 2002 was the only one I did it with. No probs.

Actually, it is drive image 7 for windows XP. drive image 2002 is
meant for the other windows versions. If you buy version 7, they
throw in a 2002 CD as well.

While that is true per their website, I don't personally believe that for
one moment. I have had DI before DI2002 came out. I have used DI2002 with XP
up until recently when I bought DI7. IMHO, they said that because there were
so many problems using DI2002 with XP that they didn't want to fix them and
brought out a newer version rather than a bugfix and made you buy it.

They USED to say that DI2002 worked with XP.
