Hi all,

All of a sudden powerpoint would not open anymore. Behavior :

Double click --> The rectangle frame "powepoint" flashes. then nothing. Its
dead
Double click --> message box " the last attempt was unsuccessfull. You can
lauch ppt in safe mode Y/N" -->Y -->another message box "could not launch
Msiexec.exe" --> Then dead again.

Infos :
-->XP and Office student and familly edition.
--> I have antivir running
--> Isse exists with and without the firewall running.

--> More interestingly, when the computer is started in windows safe mode,
then ppt runs !

I spent 2days fooling around with google... tough luck, hope someone can help

Tks.

Since it runs when you boot into Safe Mode, I'd start with updating your
video drivers.

You might also run Detect and Repair. Open Windows Control Panel, choose
Add/Remove Programs, and repair the Office installation there.

If that doesn't work, then it's probably something to do with the
msiexec.exe file. What's the exact error message you get there?

Thank you for your answer.

I did try to repair my office install.... no change.
I re-installed it altoghether... no change.

The update of the video drivers seem logical, although I did not mess with
them between the time ppt would work and now.

I saw some post were printers were creating issues. I disintalled all my
printers... no change. I re-installed... no change.

Messages : (translated from french :-) !)
1st double click --> Nothing happens (beside the flash/or not)
2nd double click -->The last atttempt failed.Safe mode will allow you to
isolate the problem....Y/N ? --> Yes --> Nothing happens
3rd double click --> Failure to launch ppt in safe mode.Do you want to use
"detect and repair" Y/N ? --> Y --> new window "impossible to launch
Msiexec.exe."

Msiexec :

It is set in manual mode. I did launch it manually. No change with ppt.
As seen in posts I set it it to automatically restart upon failure....
I seem to have no install problems

I'll look into the video drivers now. Tks.

Me again....

Its getting worse. I tried to repair then desinstall office. Guess what !
Impossible now. Just got a message that the operatioon failed.

Now what ?

"impossible to launch Msiexec.exe." is the only text in the error message on
the third try?

Thanks guys !

Echo S, I could not put a sreenshot here but YES, very small box, title
Microsoft Office with this simple words "impossible de démarrer Msiexec.exe."
Knowing that "démarrer" translates "start".... :-)

Steve,
I did check, I see the process PWPOINT come and go logically with the
actions. It sticks around while I answer any text box then goes away with the
answer.

I don't think its something a windows re-install won't fix (Yea, I am than
much desperate !).

Thank you anyway for answering..

msiexec - that's the Windows Installer service - maybe somethings is wrong
with it. You can try to unregister and register it again and see, if that
helps. Go to "Start / Run" and type

msiexec.exe /unregister

After that go again to "Start / Run" and type:

msiexec.exe /regserver

Thanks Pia,

I have gone through this move too earlier based on my finding on google, but
that did not do the trick.

I do beleive that something is wrong with the insatller although only ppt is
affected by installation issue.

I appreciated everybody's feedback but I give up and will go through a
windows install, it's been a long while anyway. Tks again.
