Created avi file using movie maker with xp and then try
inserting it as a movie in powerpoint. it says i don't
have right decompressor. Windows media player will player
will play it. This suggests that the right compressor is
on my machine, but that powerpoint doesn't know where to
find it. Has anybody got any suggestions. thanks in
advance, kerrie. (powerpoint will play an mpeg inserted no
probs).

WMV may lower the quality to a point where the video does not meet your
expectations.
You might try converting the AVI to MPEG1 instead. Or if you don't plan on
sharing the PowerPoint file with others, you can try MPEG2 for even better
quality.

One of the real ppt gurus here suggested changing the
extension of a dv encoded avi to mpg

I tried this and it worked great. Not sensible but it did
work.
