we have a new HP notebook with pre-installed Windows XP
home ed. We removed the pre-installed "works" program. We
installed MS Office 2000 w/ powerpoint. We have the
identical configuration on a PC, a Dell laptop and the
powerpts open consistently just fine. on the new HP,
sometimes they open and sometimes they present an error
message and cannot be opened. The key word here
is "sometimes" because it is inconsistent. HP claims they
cannot help us and there are no references to this problem
on the support pages. We use our presentations for
college presentation and would love to obtain consistency
here. Has anyone experienced this quirky problem and
could offer some help? Thank you in advance!

Are you saying that a single presentation will sometimes open fine, but at
other times it won't open, or will it never open? What message to you get?

Sometimes the file opens just fine. othertimes the same
file will not open and the error message
reads: "powerpoint found an error that it can't correct.
you should save presentations, quit, and then restart
powerpoint." I have tried restarting PP and the file
still does not open. but, again, I want to emphasize that
the identical file will sometimes open fine and sometimes
not.
Also, the same routine occurs when we access the HP
notebook PP files from one of our other 2 networked
computers. If, however, we access the other computer's PP
files from the HP notebook, they open fine on the HP.

It may be a hard drive problem.
