Powerpoint will not open .ppt file

My wife has just spent 6 hours creating a ppt presentation. the file was
saved and closed as normal. Now powerpoint will not open the vile, it says
it can't open that type of file (.ppt)

info: version of PowerPoint, operation system, patches and updates applied.
