I have just installed the powerpoint viewer.

What surprised me was the size of the installation file (20MB), yet
the files installed are quite small. Why is the installation file so
large?

Installed under Vista, 32bit

Thanks

It's because of the compatibility pack that's now included as part of the
Viewer so it can open 2007-format PPTX / PPSX files. The PPT 2003 Viewer,
which doesn't have the compat pack appended to it, is only about 2MB.

So ... lemme see if I have this straight:

- If you package for CD and include this puppy, it'll be ok, because P4CD
converts the file to 2003 format

- If you use it on your own PC to play PPTX files, it's cool, because all the
compat stuff is installed. Somewhere or other.

- But if you plan to distribute it on CD with your PPTXs, stop, rewind, think
it out again 'cause it ain't gonna get off the ground.

Right. Assuming "this puppy" means the 2003 Viewer, or, more accurately, the
2007 Viewer that ships with PPT 2007 -- which does *not* include the compat
pack. The 2007 Viewer that shipped with PowerPoint 2007 does not open PPTX
files, which is why package for CD converts to the 2003 file format.

Assuming you're using *PowerPoint 2007* on your PC. Again, the PPT 2007
Viewer that shipped with PPT 2007 doesn't have compat stuff installed and
doesn't open PPTX files. You can, though, install the compat pack
separately, and then it will do so.

Here's where you download the compat pack:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3AE9-4AEE-8F43-C6BB74CD1466&displaylang=en

The 2007 PPT Viewer that shipped with PPT 2007 is, for all intents and
purposes, the same as the 2003 Viewer.

think

Correct. The compat pack won't run from a CD. This is why PPT 2007's Package
for CD backsaves to 2003 format and uses the PPT 2007 Viewer sans compat
pack.

I suppose I need to write something up for the FAQ, huh?

Semi. Actually, "this puppy" meant the downloadable Viewer 2007 with compatibility features. The big honker
that set off the thread originally, question being, why's it so ginormous, when it appears to install only
1/10 of it's size worth of files on the PC.
Assuming you're using *PowerPoint 2007* on your PC.

Nope, I meant "assuming you've downloaded the big honker and installed it on your own PC and are using it
there".
Again, the PPT 2007
Viewer that shipped with PPT 2007 doesn't have compat stuff installed and
doesn't open PPTX files. You can, though, install the compat pack
separately, and then it will do so.

But the Big Honker does have the compat pack stuff built in. We just don't know where it lands when it's
installed. Somewhere other than the viewer's installation directory.
Correct. The compat pack won't run from a CD. This is why PPT 2007's Package
for CD backsaves to 2003 format and uses the PPT 2007 Viewer sans compat
pack.

And likewise if you install the standalone viewer with compat pack (The Big Honker, aka TBH), the compat pack
bits don't run off CD, so for all infants and porpoises, you're still running the 2003 viewer, and won't be
able to pack up 2007 / PPTX files with it.
