PowerPoint started crashing without any warning

I think I now know why people consider non-MS product:
They do because when an MS product starts creating
problems, your life can be pretty miserable.

In any case, my PowerPoint started crashing in the middle
of updating multiple presentations. I cannot say much to
help diagnose the problem as it just hangs; you cannot do
anything but kill its process, and restart the program,
and save every 30 seconds. Have anybody else experienced
a similar problem? Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

As a start, see if any of these things help.
Do this before using PowerPoint seriously

If they don't, post back and tell us what version of PPT, what version of
Windows, and if you can, try to keep an eye out for anything specific you
might be doing when the files hang (changing fonts, for instance). Also, do
you get any error messages?

True of most products, I'd say, not just MS ones.

What are you doing in PPT when the hang happens?
Is there anything unusual on the slides where this happens?

Have you tried the general troubleshooting suggestions here:

Hello,

Did you know that you can automatically send an error report to Microsoft
any time an Office 2003 application is hung or not responding (not just
when a crash occurs)?

To use the Microsoft Office Application Recovery tool (Start -> All
Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools -> Microsoft Office
Application Recovery) in Office 2003 to send in an error report whenever
PowerPoint (Word, Excel, etc.) is hung or not responding:

1) Start -> All Programs -> Microsoft Office -> Microsoft Office Tools ->
Microsoft Office Application Recovery
2) Select "Microsoft Office PowerPoint" from list of applications in dialog
3) Click "End Application..." button.
4) Click on "What data does this report contain?
5) Note down the following information:

* AppName:
* AppVer:
* AppStamp:
* ModName:
* ModVer:
* ModStamp:
* fDebug:
* Offset:

6) Click "Close"
7) Click "Send Error Report

If you post the information noted in step 5 above to this newsgroup I might
be able to verify whether or not this is already a known issue.
