I created a slideshow on a Windows XP O/S using Powerpoint
2002. I want to distribute to my family on a cd that will
open and run automatically, either when they click on the
slideshow or when it is read in the cd drive. Do I need
to include powerpoint viewer on the cd or will creating a
show work on its own.

So does powerpoint doesn't have a create autorun cd
feature without the use of other products?

I also have Powerpoint 2000 on a W2k laptop, will this
work better with the viewer 97?

In PowerPoint XP, You can turn off all the features that will not work in earlier versions. Which makes it easier to create presentations for earlier versions.
