powerpoint slide transition partially crashes my computer

I am running XP and have discovered a problem with slide transitions and
animation. Powerpoint will freeze mid-animation or mid-slide transition.
The only way I can get to other programs (including my desktop) is with the
Alt-Tab function. The only way to get back into power point is to restart my
computer, open a file and choose "Slide Show", "Set-up Show", and select
"Show without animation".

I have tried shutting off any non-standard programs which doesn't seem to
help.

I set the graphics hardware acceleration to zero. The problem still appears
eventually although it does not appear immediately (this was the case before
changing the hardware accelerator). Right now I am not interested in slide
transitions where I first discovered the problem (colleague gave me a
presentation). However, both slide transitions and animation trigger the
lock-up. It isn't really a lock-up as I can get to other programs via
alt-tab. However, you should be aware that my screen resolution changes for
all other programs (bigger and uglier).

I have no problems with GIF files as long as there are no slide transitions
or other PowerPoint induced animations.
