I have set up a slide presentation in A4 size for someone in Europe. When I
view the ppt show, I see the slides same as 'on-screen' size, however when
the European affiliate views the presentation he is getting a black bar on
the top and on the bottom of the slides in show view.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?

if you set the page size to A4 you will always get "black bars" as A4 does
not have the same proportions as 'on-screen'

My top tip is to set the page size to "on-screen" if the main aim is to
present 'on-screen or projected'

Powerpoint can still print the presentation to a4 paper without messing
about with anything.

But why wouldn't this be consistent; that is, on my labtop I don't get the
'black bars'?

On Screen shows are set up for a 4:3 screen ratio which matches most standard
laptops and desktop displays. But if the laptop has a wide display, there'll be
black bars right and left (PowerPoint won't distort the show to fit the wider
display)
