I want to build slides where the indivual lines (or bars) on a chart appear
indivually as builds. I can make the entire chart appear as a build. Does
anyone know how to make the lines appear one at a time as builds?

In custom animation double click the chart entry and look in chart animation
group chart

In PowerPoint 2002/XP and above,
Add the effect you want.
Then right click on the effect, select Effect Options.
Click on the Chart Animation tab.
Click on the "Group chart:" dropdown, select By element in category or series.
Uncheck Animate grid and legend (if you do not want to animate it).
OK your way out.

In PowerPoint 2000 and below, you can change to By element in category or
series, in Introduce chart elements section (Which is under the Chart Effects
tab).

Not all effects work AFAIK.
Tested out Blind, appear, fade, wipe, radom effects and wheel so far.
