I hope someone can jump in with an easier way but this is the only way I know.
Make your hanging chart and use the wireframe design.
Cut and paste special as an enhanced meta file
ungroup twice
select the lines and change to colour of the slide background
Think I may have mislead you with the question, I want to have a laddered
list for subordinates, in previous versions that was a layout you could
choose and I can't find it now, only a hanging left or right with boxes.
