We have a standalone server with about 20 accounts local on the server. We
share files from the server with access only to the local accounts. Sometimes
users get the message that a file is being modified by an account name that
is not local to the server when they try to open a PowerPoint file. What is
returning this message PowerPoint or Windows? How do I find out what has this
file open?

Does the message offer the user the option of opening the file read-only? If
so, it's likely Powerpoint's message.

On the server, open Manage Computer, then open System Tools, Shared Folders,
Open Files. That should list the currently open files. I think from there you
can work out what user/computer has each file open and/or disconnect the file
from the user.
