Powerpoint not playing wmv or mpg

I haven't experienced this problem for quite some time. I have tried
inserting movies into ppt and they'r not playing. The only thing I have been
able to play is an uncompressed avi and it's a huge file so it plays really
slow. When I put the ppt into show mode the movie shows as the intital image
and then just goes black. I tried getting the file path about as short as
possible, directly on my hard drive, no folders, but it still doesn't
work.ideas?
