powerpoint not playing gifs

I morphed an image and saved the morphed image as a gif.
Last year ...I had no problem importing it and getting
it to play using powerpoint 2002 but this has not been
the case with powerpoint 2003. It will not play the
animated gif. Any suggestions why the animated gifs are
not playing?

Jeannie,

I've seen this a few times, but I've not heard any progress on getting it
fixed. Sorry.

Did you insert the GIF into a new PowerPoint 2003 presentation, or are you
using the presentation that was created in PowerPoint 2002? If the latter,
you might check the Office Update site (Help > Check for Updates) to make
sure that you have all available updates installed. Another thing that I
might try is to open the GIF in another animation product (e.g. GIF
Construction Set or Animation Shop from JASC) and save it under a different
name - - just on the off chance that it might be a subtle issue with a
difference in how the morphing software complies with the GIF format. It's
worth a shot.

I did a search into this powerpoint newsgroup by typing
animated gifs. I read the responses of the experts..your
included and found out if I allowed looping in my
animated gif.. the animation worked in powerpoint 2003.
My concern is when I play this presentation on powerpoint
2002... will my animated gifs have to be tweaked back
to " no looping allowed"?

Hi Jeannie,

AFAIK you will not have to tweak your animated gifs back to "no looping" for
use in PPT 2002, that version will play looping gifs, too.

If you want your animation to play only once, you can define a longer time
to show the last frame (3 or 4 seconds), so that you have time enough to hit
a key to proceed to the next slide before the animation starts over.

Kind regards,
Ute

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello Jeannie,

Due to a bug in GDI+ (which returns the wrong number for how many times a
animated GIF should repeat) animated GIF's loop one fewer times during
PowerPoint 2003 slide show than the settings specified within the GIF file.
Because of this, GIF's set to play once (not repeat) actually don't play at
all (only show the first frame of the animatedd GIF), GIF's set to play
twice (repeat once) only play once (don't repeat), and so on and so on.

Microsoft is aware of this issue (a bug has been entered into the Windows
database <the owners of GDI+).
