I have Microsoft Power Point sp3 (9.0.6620) running in Windows 2000
Professional sp3 connected to a Windows 2000 sp3 network and using a NAS box
for storage as my file share.

Whenever I open a powerpoint file from the network for the first time on a
machine since it was last opened on another machine, the modified date is
automatically updated. This happens as soon as the file is open. So no
changes made to the file. No time for autosave to be working. Literally as
soon as I open it, flip to Windows Explorer and do a details on the file,
the modified date has changed.

To recreate this. Create a power point presentation. I did with a single
title and subtext slide with the words Test in it. Save it on the network.
Have two PC's handy. Go to PC1 , open. Go to PC2 look at the modified
date. Open the file on PC2. Look at modified date and the time will have
changed to the current time. Close. Go to PC1, look at the modified date.
Open the file on PC1. Look at the modified date and the time will have
changed to the current time. Repeat back and forth as much as you want.
Every time it is opened on a new PC, the modified date changes.

Items that make changes to behavior:
This only happens if in Tools - Options on the General tab the Name field is
different on the two PC's. If I set the name field to be the same, the
modified date does not changed.
This only happens if the file is stored on the NAS box. If it is stored on
the local PC hard drive or a Windows 2000 server, the modified date does not
get changed.
This only happens with Powerpoint. With no other application have I noticed
an issue and I have done testing with Word and Excel.

My guess is that it is a bug of interaction between Powerpoint and the lan
manager code that the NAS box is using. I found references in the microsoft
knowledge base and newsgroups of this problem in the past with Powerpoint
files saved on a Windows NT network. But of course that was several years
ago so the version of powerpoint and the Windows server were earlier
versions. My guess is that there is a bug in Powerpoint that has never been
addressed, but that it was fixed on the Windows 2000 server side.

I will also be contacing the NAS vendor to address the issue from their side
if possible. But since it only happens in power point, and only happens if
the user name information is different, I feel it is also a power point
issue.

Anyone have any ideas?

Thank you.

It's come up here before with other non-MS file servers of various sorts.

Seems not to happen here when I open PPT files from a Win2K server share,
FWIW.

So I'd say that your analysis of the problem is on target. I'd also guess
that you won't want to hold your breath while waiting for a resolution.
