I have PP2002 fully updated on XP Pro....plenty of RAM
and graphics card memory to work with.

PP freezes on the first slide of some presentations but
not others. It ALWAYS freezes on files e-mailed to me
from France, if that makes any difference. The French
that send it to me say that I am the only that has this
problem.

Any ideas? Thanks!

Hm. I know there have been some issues with PPT 2003 and the French
autocorrect tools, but this doesn't sound like that problem.

You might try changing your hardware acceleration, as odd as that
sounds. http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00129.htm has instructions.

Check to make sure your graphics card driver is up to date. I was using nVIDIA GeForce2go chips on 2 notebooks. The notebook manufacturer replaced them after 1.5 years of headaches (freezing in PowerPoint show--had to disconnect power and remove battery to shut down--lots of fun in the middle of a show with an audience of 1500) because it was cheaper to send me brand new machines than it was to write new drivers for them.

[CRITICAL UPDATE - Anyone using Office 2003 should install the critical
update as soon as possible. From PowerPoint, choose "Help -> Check for
Updates".]

Hello,

There's a possibility that you are running into problems with background
spell checking and some languages. To determine this, see whether the
problem continues to occur when you turn off the option to check spelling
while typing:

1) Tools -> Options
2) In "Spelling and Style" tab, uncheck "Check spelling as you type" and
click "OK"

If the problem no longer occurs, check to see if you have installed the
latest service packs for Office (which fixes many knows issues with some
language proofing tools).

After getting updated to the latest patch level, see if the problem still
occurs when you turn on "Check spelling as you type" again.
