Can you place an active excel spreadsheet in a powerpoint presentation and be
able to fill the excel spreadsheet in while working in the presentation?

Which version are you using? Below are instructions for 2003:
1. got to View -> Toolbars -> Control Toolbox
2. On the Control Toolbox toolbar click the 'More Controls' button (little
hammer & spanner crossed)
3. Scroll down to and click on 'Microsoft Office Spreadsheet'
4. Draw your spreadsheet to the size you want
5. Have a look at the properties (hand holding a piece of paper icon) to set
as you want (e.g. toolbar showing or not)
