PowerPoint Effects Problems

I'm having a number of problems with various effects
options; perhaps I'm doing something wrong?

1. If I select "hide on next mouse click", the result is
the same as if I used "hide after animation". How do I
stop the graphic from disappearing before I click?

2. I tried to add a motion path to a star autoshape. The
effect works correctly if it's the last on the list of
effects, but if I move it up the list, the star appears
as soon as the slide changes, and then reappears with the
proper motion at the correct time.

Does anyone know what's going on here?

This site will be of unimaginable value to you:
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/
It has answers to questions you didn't think to ask... yet.

** Always mention the version of PowerPoint you are using. Answers vary
according to version, doubly so for animations. ** I'm going to whimsically
guess you are using PowerPoint 2002 (motion paths were not available prior
to this version).

This will start you off on animations in PowerPoint 2002:
(I'm guessing you are new to PP 2002, right?)

Since you're talking about motion paths below, I assume you're using PPT
2002? If so, why not use an exit effect instead of the "hide on next
mouse click"? (You're right, it doesn't work right, though.)

You probably added the effect twice. The one on the top of the list can
just be deleted if you select it in the list on the custom animation
task pane. (See the link B gave you for specifics there.)

If you move it up the list, you may have to change the timing of the
animation so it happens "after previous" and with a delay instead of
"with previous." It just kinda depends on what you want and what you've
got set up. We'd need a lot more specifics in order to offer specific
help there.

Thanks for the response. You and "B" are correct in
assuming that I have PP 2002. I have used earlier
versions, and I'm trying to assign some of the new
animation effects to old graphics in the presentation.
Here's what I'm doing:
1. Insert file (graphic)onto slide
2. Click Custom Animation
3. Click Add Effect
4. Click on desired Motion Path effect
At this point the object is shown only once in the list
of animations (usually three or four down the list
according to the desired sequence). However, when I
click on Play the object immediately appears on the slide
and remains there, to be followed again at the sequence
point with the effect. I cannot remove the first
appearance as it doesn't show on the list. I've had a
similar problem with Emphasis effects, but not with
Entrance or Exit (!) Got any ideas?

A motion path animation will only move an object, not make it appear or
disappear.

If you want the object to be hidden at the beginning of a slide, then you
will have to create an entrance animation. You can combine effects by have
them both a motion path and an entrance animation start together (with
previous option). So a fade in (entrance) and move up (motion path) will
have an object fade in while moving to the desired location. In this manner
you are able to build you custom animations.

What is probably confusing you, is that the effects before 2002 were one at
a time and only entrance animations, now you have more options.

B

Yup.

Also, to add more than one effect to an object (such as having an
entrance, then a path, then an exit), you'll want to select the object
*on the slide* and use Add Effect.

If you select the animation of the object *in the animation task pane*,
the Add Effect button becomes a Change button, which allows you to do
just that -- change an effect you've already added.
