No matter what file (even new ones with no pictures),
Powerpoint is running exceptionally slowly. It can't
even keep up with my typing, which is not a problem in
the other Office programs. Any thoughts?

Hello,

We have seen this symptom caused by a virus, adware, spyware or other TSR
running on a system.

To troubleshoot this do the following:

A) Determine whether someting in the system startup is causing the problem:

1) Close all running applications
2) Start -> Run
3) Type in "msconfig" without quotation marks
4) Click "OK"
5) Click on "Selective Startup" in the "General" tab of the System
Configuration Utility
6) Uncheck the "Load Startup Items" option
7) Click "OK"
8) Click "Restart" when prompted to restart system
9) After system as restarted, launch Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 and
see whether the symptom has gone away.

If symptom has gone away, selectively add items from the startup list until
the problem reoccurs (at which time you will have identified the software
which is causing the problem).

B) Selectively loading back items from startup list

1) Close all running applications
2) Start -> Run
3) Type in "msconfig" without quotation marks
4) Click "OK"
5) Click on "Startup" tab of the System Configuration Utility
6) Click on checkbox to add first item not already selected in the list.
7) Click "OK"
8) Click "Restart" when prompted to restart system
9) After system as restarted, launch Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2003 and
see whether the symptom reoccurs.
10) If symptom does not reoccur, go back to step 1 and repeat.

Once you detemine what software is causing the problem, we would certainly
appreciate if if you post your results in this newsgroup.

Thanks,

Re: PowerPoint gets the slows

I've seen this happen here (everything else gets the slows too). Here it was
the Toshiba Help and Support Center app that was the culprit (the thing that
launches when you choose Start, Help & Support (WinXP Home in this case; the
same app runs on their XP/Pro installations, or so it appears).

Under some circumstances, HelpHost.EXE remains in memory even after you shut
the help center down. ISTR that it gradually eats memory, but am not positive
of that.

I just provoked the problem again by starting it, navigating to a link that
launched a new browser window in MSIE, then using the X box to close Help
Center, then did the same to close the browser. HelpHost.EXE stayed in memory
until I did an end task on it.
