After the first 5 pictures in a PowerPoint presentation the cropping tool
fades and will not work. I have tried reloading PowerPoint and the fault
remains.

You cannot crop everything. Only images and ClipArt can be cropped, the
tool does not work on AutoShapes and text boxes and not on groups. And
don't forget to "show" PowerPoint what you want to crop by clicking on an
object. If nothing is selected, the tool is greyed out.

Best regards,
Ute

Thank you for your input. I am trying to crop images, pictures downloaded
into PowerPoint through Photo Album. I do highlight them and the cropping
tool remains greyed out.

If you have inserted the picture through Insert > Picture > New PhotoAlbum,
then no. You can't crop them. This is because, PhotoAlbum does not insert
pictures directly. Instead, it creates AutoShapes (rectangles or other shapes
depending on what you have chosen), and fill them with the pictures.

If you want to crop the pictures, then you can't use PowerPoint's PhotoAlbum.
You might want to look out for some other options here:

As Tohlz says you cant use the crop tool on photo album pictures. If you
really have to -there's a slightly convoluted way. Save as html and find the
file of dependant files. Open the picture file in an application that can
crop it (you probably have office picture manager , photoshop would be
better. Resave the cropped picture without changing the name and open the
html file in photoshop. Actually takes a lot less time than it sounds!

In addition to the other suggestions, here's a quickie:

Select the picture
Choose Edit, Copy
Choose Edit, PasteSpecial, pick PNG as the paste type.

Now you have a copy of your picture that you can crop
