Powerpoint Crashes when printing

Hi Guys,

We have recently updated our administrative install point of Office XP
SP2 to SP3 (both by over the top of existing install and starting from
scratch)
likewise we have used the existing mst file and rebuilt it as well
with the same results.

The problem we are having is with most powerpoint files containing
images (created with any version of Powerpoint) is that when we go to
print the software crashes and brings up the std ms error which
provides no information at all as to what casued it.

We have tried this on a number of machines at different service patch
levels, different OS's, different hardware. The printer drivers have
varied from HP's/Ricohs/Cannons etc.

We have contacted MS support who provided us with little help appart
from trying powerpoint in safe mode, which again provided no luck. The
message appears to be random.. Not happening on all of the files...
Some files it happens all the time.. others occasionally. The one
thing in common is the files that do fail to print contain images.

Anyone else had the same issue?

Two thoughts jump to mind ...

1) You are using a network to open your PowerPoint file. PowerPoint does a
lot of touchy-feely things with its source PPT file and if the network is
clogged with printing data, it may become electronically despondent, with a
pain all down it's left side. See:
**Are you on a network?

2) You only have network printers installed. PowerPoint appears to use the
local print drivers for some of its rendering functions. Try doing a local
install of a printer. You can remove the physical printer, as long as it
has been installed locally. See
**Do this before using PowerPoint seriously

If neither of these solutions fix this intermittent bug, please post back so
we can help you did a bit more.

Bill,
No luck at all wih either solution. Tried a number of different
printers etc and mapping the network port to the local pc with the
same results. Saving it to the HDD had no change either.
This has only been an issue since service pack 3.
I've tried changing the video card drivers etc and different hardware
platforms with the same result it appears to only happen with PP docs
that contain images in them ranging in size from 300kb - 8000kb

You won't believe what the issue was...

After dealing with paid ms support who were of no use. and countless
other sources... i turned off background printing and the program no
longer crashed... so bleeding obvious n simple....

thanks for your help anyway guys

James

Ah, geeze. Thanks for following up with this info, James. I'm sure it will
help someone else in future.

I have the same issue. It is with one particular machine. When I try to print a web based powerpoint slide show, powerpoint closes or crashes. I tried copying it to the desk top and doing it that way, same result. I also did all the MS Updates and printer drivers. I tried CN and PCL drivers no difference. I have also reloaded MS Office 2010. This is on a Windows 7 machine. anyone know a real fix for this sure would be appreciated.
