Powerpoint closes but still runs in the background!

I use MS Office 2000
I click on Powerpoint and it opens
I close Powerpoint and it closes on screen but continues
to run in the background
I click on Powerpoint and it won't open
I close the computer and I get the program (Powerpoint)
not responding message do you want to end now?
I have tried using the repair program on the software -
no luck
I have uninstalled and then reinstalled office - no luck
I have downloaded updates but this problem persists.

CAn someone help pleae? Thank you
