My copy of PowerPoint in Office XP has stopped being able
to load PowerPoint files. It gives me a a message of
"PowerPoint can't read..." followed by path\file_name.ppt
regardless of the ppt file whether old or new. It seems to
be able to create new files but once they are saved and
PowerPoint is exited the file cannot be loaded the next
time PowerPoint is run. When I transfer the new file to
another computer that has the XP version of Powerpoint
installed that copy of PowerPoint can read the file. Also,
Powerdesk Pro 5 which has a file viewer that can view the
PowerPoint files on my original computer whether they are
old or new. I have tried running repair option on the
Office XP remove applet but after the repair had finished I
had the sam problem. I suppose the next step is to
completely remove Office, then delete any references to it
in the registry and reinstall office but I thought I would
see whether anyone else has run into this problem first.
Help would be appreciated.

Jerry,

This is not good. I found an article that covers the result, but it only
says what you should do if you experience it.

So, as far as I can see, the article confirms that your file is corrupt, and
says what you should do when it happens. However, you are experiencing a
problem that causes the corruption every time you save.

One thing I wonder about....

Have you added software recently? Changed anything? Drunk too much coffee?

What I mean is, could something other than gremlins have triggered it? Did
your computer crash, or anything you can remember as strange? Too many
rubbish files in the temp directory?

Have you read the www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq part of: "Don't do anything until
you have read this"?

Hello,

There's a good chance that you are running into a known problem with Office
applications and Norton's AntiVirus software.

The Norton AntiVirus plug-in for Microsoft Office scans documents for macro
virus infections in Office products. This plug-in may cause performance
issues, the inability to open files or OLE objects from within Office (such
as design templates or Graphs in PowerPoint), or the inability to install
some Office applications.

The latest information about the problems associated with this plug-in can
be located in the following KB article:
