PowerPoint cant read file

Using a Dell running XP. Have old PP presentations that
work just fine using Viewer97. Have just installed Office
PP 2003. Not only will it not read the old presentations,
I tried creating a simple slide, saved it and PP won't
read it. I can display it just fine with 97 viewer.
Is there someting that needs to be enabled or some other
software required to allow it to work???? I have already
installed the critical update as suggested....Thx
 
The critical update should take care of the problem. I'd probably call
Microsoft at this point.
