This will happen with PPT 95 files, because PPT 2007 cannot open them.
How
old exactly are the files? Do you know what "older versions" they were
created with?
Actually, even if they were created in PPT 97, 2000, 2002 or 2003, if
they
were saved as a "PowerPoint 97-2003 & 95" format, you'll probably have
this issue and will need to find a previous version of PPT to open the
files in. Once you do that, just save them as a Presentation (*.ppt)
and
skip any of the Save As options that put PPT versions in them.
That said, and assuming that's not the issue...
Does this happen with all files or just with some?
If it's just individual files, open a new blank presentation and use
Home
tab | New Slide (bottom half) | Reuse Slides and insert the slides into
the new file. Try it with "keep source formatting" checked, and if that
doesn't work, try it unchecked.
If it's all files, try these things:
1. Make sure you have SP1 for Office 2007 installed
2. Run Office Diagnostics (in PPT it's in Office Button | PPT Options |
Resources)
3. Install a printer driver (I know, sounds weird. But follow these
instructions anyway:
How to install a TEST printer driver
http://www.pptfaq.com/FAQ00952.htm )
Oh, here's something. Is the file password protected?
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/285497
However, this doesn't even make sense. The issue is that you cannot
open
the file, right? But Microsoft's solution is to open the file and type
the
password. Whaaaaaat?
Ooooooh, wait. Which antivirus program are you using?

but
still might be relevant.)

I encounter the error "PowerPoint can't open the type of file

when I try and open PowerPoint files created in older versions of

solves
