PowerPoint and Windows XP (sp2)

I think I have found a reason for the problem I have been having with PPS
files being opened directly attached to an e-mail. During another problem
fix, I was on the phone with an HP Rep and had to uninstall the service pack.
We set a time for us to talk the next day to continue with my other problem.
... .. ... I had received an email with a PPS attachment and on a chance,
clicked on the PPS file AND IT OPENED FROM THE EMAIL. My question now is, how
does windows xp (sp2) affect the PPS files.?

Navy Chief,

The only difference between a .ppt and a .pps file is that last letter.

The reason that the pps auto runs, is because of something called "file association"

Like when you double click a microsoft word .DOC file. the .DOC tells the computer what to do with the file.

Send a presentation that opens automatically in email

It might be something else that you did with the HP Rep because I have Windows
XP SP-2 installed and I just sent myself a .PPS file and when it arrived I
opened it and it opened in Slide Show mode.

What is the other problem that you are working with HP on? What other steps
have been taken in that process? Maybe we can piece it together.

Shoot! Now I recall from your previous thread (11/02/04) that you are trying to
open it on a system that only has the PowerPoint 2003 Viewer installed. I guess
we'll have to wait until John Langhans to come back with some info from the
testing groups at Microsoft. However, just in case he doesn't see your post
here, you might post a reply in the previous thread just to be sure that he sees
it.

OK...I deleted XP sp2 service pack and the emialed file would open. I have
now reinstalled XP(sp2) and I'm right back where I started. They will not
open. I have to save the file. When I click on the file from where I saved it
to...the viewer automaticall opens the file and it runs. Again...just can't
open the file from the email. Says I don't have an "associate" program
selected which I do.

Yes, Microsoft has acknowledged the problem. (See John Langhan's last reply to
your previous post.) We'll just have to wait for them to come back with a fix.
But since there is a work around, I suspect you're going to have to live with it
for awhile. It's certainly not worth leaving SP 2 uninstalled.

Thanks for all your help. I thought I was losing my mind there for
awhile....and the people at HP were getting an ear full also. And you are
right about not reinstalling SP2. Thanks again
