Thanks.

Since you are using PowerPoint 2007, you don't need the compatibility pack
in order to open PowerPoint files.

However, if you are using an earlier version of PowerPoint, the error
message you get is exactly the same as the one you posted. If you open
PowerPoint and go to Help | About, it will tell you which version of
PowerPoint you're using. The compatibility pack must have all "high
priority" Windows Updates installed before it will work -- perhaps that is
the problem. (It's noted in the first sentence of the Overview section at
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...70-3ae9-4aee-8f43-c6bb74cd1466&displaylang=en )

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but whenever I've seen this "no
converter" error in the past, it's meant my file is completely corrupt. BUT
when that's happened, the error message is accompanied by a sentence that
says, "Sorry, PowerPoint cannot read the outline from
<filename_and_path.ppt>. No text converter is installed for this file type."

The thing is, PowerPoint 2007 files shouldn't corrupt nearly as easily as
the file type the previous versions of PowerPoint uses. And since you don't
have the "cannot read the outline" part, you probably aren't dealing with a
corrupt file, but just in case...

If you open PowerPoint 2007 to a new, blank presentation and go to the Home
tab | New Slides button, click the New Slide text at the bottom of that
button and then choose Reuse Slides and navigate to the C:\Documents and
Settings\Chuck Adams\Desktop\Interesting facts about me and my family.ppt
file, can you insert the slides into a new presentation that way?

I am using Office 2007, and did try to dowload the compatability pack.
However it stated that that file was already installed on my current

created using PPT 2003.

Any help/suggestions?

Echo,

My files were saved as "Microsoft Office PowerPoint 97-2003
Presentation (.ppt)" files.

In addition to the previous error message I was receiving, am I now
receiving this new error message on other ppt files:

"Powerpoint cant open the type of file represented by H:\....."

Any thoughts?

*****

Yes. There *is* no "Microsoft Office PowerPoint 97-2003 Presentation (.ppt)"
option in PPT 2003. If you look at that option, it really says "PowerPoint
97-2003 & 95 Presentation (.ppt)" That "and 95" part will get you in other
ways, but I also believe that may be the problem here, because PPT 2007
cannot open PPT 95 files.

So the solution is to open the files in PPT 2003 and just save them as
"Presentation." That is actually what you could call the "97-2003 format" --
any version from PPT 97 through 2003 can open those files. You just lose the
"and 95" part, so PPT 95 won't be able to open the files. But PPT 2007 will.

Unrelated question for anyone who might know: Why doesn't Amar's post get
quoted the way other posts do when I reply to them? FWIW, it looks like the
original post comes from Google Groups, and I'm replying via Windows Mail on
Vista.
