PowerPoint 2007 Template Conversion to PowerPoint XP Issue - Backgroundgoes dark

We are having big problems with the conversion of our PowerPoint 2007 presentations to PowerPoint XP.

It seems that when the PowerPoint 2007 presentation is saved to compatiblity mode, and then opened in PowerPoint XP, the background turns black (or very dark grey) in slide show view, and when clients open a presentation in the lower version, then they cannot edit it.

This is with a vendor created PowerPoint 2007 template. Is there a fix for this?
