Powerpoint 2007 not saving .ppt files

I am running Office 2007 under Vista Home Premium x64. I've noticed that when
I make changes to existing .ppt (not .pptx) files and save, the changes are
not stored on my hard disk (I'm not trying to save to a network drive).
Furthermore, if I create a new presentation and Save As a .ppt file, the file
does not show up in Windows Explorer and is not accessible to other programs
such as e-mail applications.

I ran the Office diagnostics but it found no issues. As far as I know, my
installation is fully up to date with SP2.

Can someone help? This is a really frustrating problem!

I have tried to saving to my directory structure (C:\Users\Carolyn\...) and
the Desktop.

I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at, but it doesn't seem to matter
where I save the file to or how I save it. I switched the default format from
..pptx to .ppt and that seemed to help. However, I'm noticing some truly
bizarre behavior from Powerpoint in terms of files and directories...

Most recently, I changed the name of a folder and then tried to save a new
Powerpoint presentation to the renamed folder. However, in the Save As dialog
box, Powerpoint was still displaying the OLD file name. It's as if Powerpoint
maintains its own image of my folder structure somewhere else. It makes me
wonder if I will be able to retrieve all of the work I'm doing!

I was thinking it might be a user profile issue, so I wondered about saving
to the harddrive directly -- not inside any user-specific folders like
Desktop or My Documents or what have you.

What you describe is very odd behavior, and it's certainly not anything I've
ever seen before. I did often have trouble saving files where I wanted to
save them when I first installed Windows Vista -- but that wasn't a
PowerPoint issue.

Do you see the same kind of problem with Word files, or is it only PPT files
(or, actually, PPTX files)?

I've been looking for the issue with both Word and Excel but haven't noticed
anything strange with them.

I tried to recreate the problem in the C:\ directory and Powerpoint seemed
to work fine. The folder structure might be the issue, but it seems to me
that the problem is intermittent.

I received one more symptom yesterday (I mention this partly in defense of
my sanity - I'm certainly starting to question it!): After e-mailing a .ppt
file that I created to a co-worker (running XP), he said that he tried to
save it to his hard drive, but then couldn't find it. He then restarted his
PC and tried to save the file again, and it worked.

I really feel like I've wandered into the Twilight Zone here.

Wow, I just don't have any idea, but it does sound like it might be related
to your user profile. But that doesn't explain your colleague's issue --
unless he's got a user profile problem, too!

I'd be tempted to create a new profile on the machine and see if it acts the
same way.
