Powerpoint 2007 - "invalid reference" while creating charts

While creating charts in PP 2007 (Vista), as I am entering data after each
cell I input I get:

"A formula in this worksheet contains one or more invalid references"

I have to hit OK before I continue. Really slows down input.

I am inputting simple numbers, not formulae and the list of data is small -
4-5 columns by 5-6 rows. Selecting the data range does not fix the problem.

What am I missing?

Do any cells have a little triangle in the upper left corner?
That indicates that the cell contains a formula that Excel considers to have
errors.
