Hi There,

I'm experiencing a problem with PowerPoint where it crashes when I click on
and move a Pie Chart within my presentation. I'm currently running Office
2007 (SP2) on Windows XP (SP3) and have 2 GB RAM, at least 1.2 GB free when
doing the operation.

Please could you let me know if this is a bug and if there is a solution to
this issue?

Thank you.
Reuben

This is not a bug I'm aware of.

How are you clicking and moving the pie chart? If you click on it and then
hit the arrows on your keyboard, yes, it will crash. That is a bug. But that
is not how you nudge a chart on a PPT 2007 slide, either! :-) Clicking the
chart and clicking keyboard arrows just moves you from one object to another
within the chart.

To nudge a chart on a PPT 2007 slide, press Ctrl on your keyboard, then
click the chart. See the little round handles? NOW you can use the arrow
keys to move your chart around on the slide. (I know, I know, this is so not
intuitive. I'm just the messenger!)

Now, if you're clicking the chart and trying to drag with the mouse and
you're crashing, that's a different story. Holler back if that's the case
.... or if you're trying to move the chart by some other method.

While I hate to contrdict The Chart Goddess, the same or similar problem
*can*
also cause PPT to crash when you move a chart around via click and drag.
In
the example I saw, it doesn't happen anywhere as predictably as the
arrowkey
crash but does happen.

Oooooh, I forgot about that. (I was totally thinking about nudging!) Thanks!

(And hey, contradict me all you want, especially when I'm wrong!)

I experience crashes when trying to edit any chart or graph. Very little has
to be changed before it shuts down. Latest updates are all installed.
Cannot work in the program.

I have a user who is experiencing the same problem. The only work around was
to edit the graphs using the format size inputs. I don't know if this is a
great work around, but it allowed the user to finish the project without
further crashes.

Is MS working on this?

Same issue here...if I click multiple times on a chart in powerpoint it hangs
and I have to shut it down. ON the phone with MS now and its not getting me
anywhere.

Any idea of when the fix might be available. I've had numerous issues/bugs
since the SP2 udpate. The pie chart crashes involve more normal editing
behavior than moving the charts w/ arrows keys: multiple quick clicks,
simply navigating between chart elements w/ arrows, changing fonts or
colors... all can generate crashes.
Every office 2007 program I use (XP-SP3: OL, XLS, Word, PPT) generates
crashes lately w/ increasing frequency. Not a novice... I regularly update,
routinely troubleshoot problems and scour the net for insight on problems.
But this is the buggiest patch I've ever installed. (I'm also getting
multiple, mysterious .tmp files at every file save, same file size, in the
same folder. Not traditional ~xxxxxxxx.tmp, small kb, files that get flushed
when the file is closed but eight-character .tmp files that have to be
manually removed.)

What's up? thanks for any insight.

I feel your pain. I struggled mightily with the SP2 chart bugs last weekend,
and it was just maddening. You are correct -- it seems clicking almost
anything in one will generate a crash.

I don't know when there will be a fix for the charts, sure wish I did. I
just know they're aware of it and working on it. (I know that doesn't really
help either of us, and you have no idea how frustrating that is for me.)

Same issue here. When you have to make little changes to 200-300 different
charts, this gets SOOOO annoying. For awhile I wasn't sending the error
messages, but I started the last couple days in hopes that Microsoft will
realize how often it happens (like every 30 seconds! lol). I read on another
site somebody said aroung Aug.20th that an updated was expected by Microsoft
in the next month... I hope its sooner than later! I have the SP2 update
and had my IT person reinstall my Office Suite, but neither have fixed the
problem.

As for the hangup, its similar to everybody else, when I double click on
something in the chart or just get into a grove and am making changes pretty
quickly - it will hang up on me; forcing me to go into Task Manager and End
task. Usually will save my changes when it pulls up again, but when you are
making very slight changes and messing with tons of numbers, it suchs having
to check each chart to see if the numbers are new or old.

I did the same thing Mike did, didn't send error reports back to Microsoft.
I now send EVERY SINGLE ONE. and everyone one of my Office 2007 programs has
crashed far more frequently than ever... attributable, I can only surmise, to
SP2.

I encourage every to send every single error report. I've had working
sessions where I must have sent 30 reports in 2 hours... It's a horror and I
feel as though I have a non-functioning piece of software at this point. But
not some whimisical little app that I can uninstall, it's OFFICE for goodness
sakes. I can't even run my business without it!!!

Microsoft are you really listening?

PPT MVP Enric Mañas located this hotfix a few days ago.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;975021&sd=rss&spid=11264

It does not mention SP2, and I've been unable to confirm if it's supposed to
fix our problem with charts crashing or not. But I installed it on my
machine anyway, and it seems to have done the trick. I haven't tested it
thoroughly, but in the few tests I did do, I wasn't able to make charts
crash PPT -- by arrowing, clicking too much/too quickly, moving the chart on
the slide, etc.

I don't know how corporate IT staff will feel about installing a hotfix, but
I think it might be worth a try if you can.

Same issue here. When you have to make little changes to 200-300
different
charts, this gets SOOOO annoying. For awhile I wasn't sending the error
messages, but I started the last couple days in hopes that Microsoft will
realize how often it happens (like every 30 seconds! lol). I read on
another
site somebody said aroung Aug.20th that an updated was expected by
Microsoft
in the next month... I hope its sooner than later! I have the SP2 update
and had my IT person reinstall my Office Suite, but neither have fixed the
problem.

As for the hangup, its similar to everybody else, when I double click on
something in the chart or just get into a grove and am making changes
pretty
quickly - it will hang up on me; forcing me to go into Task Manager and
End
task. Usually will save my changes when it pulls up again, but when you
are
making very slight changes and messing with tons of numbers, it suchs
having
to check each chart to see if the numbers are new or old.

I feel your pain. I struggled mightily with the SP2 chart bugs last

anything in one will generate a crash.

I don't know when there will be a fix for the charts, sure wish I did. I
just know they're aware of it and working on it. (I know that doesn't
really
help either of us, and you have no idea how frustrating that is for me.)

But this is the buggiest patch I've ever installed. (I'm also getting

What's up? thanks for any insight.

Thanks very much, I think I'll give it a shot. Since I'm a sole proprietor,

:

Hi There,

I'm experiencing a problem with PowerPoint where it crashes
when
I
click on
and move a Pie Chart within my presentation. I'm currently
running
Office
2007 (SP2) on Windows XP (SP3) and have 2 GB RAM, at least
1.2
GB
free
when
doing the operation.

Please could you let me know if this is a bug and if there
is
a
solution to
this issue?

Thank you.
Reuben
