I can confirm this behavior (in PPT 2003, though).
In addition to not seeing PPTX and the other new PPT file formats in the
list when I go to File | Open, if I switch the file type dropdown to "all
files" and try to open a PPTX file, I get this error message: PowerPoint
can't read the outline from C:\Documents and Settings\Echo\My
Documents\GreenApples.pptx. No text converter is installed for this file
type.
However, if I double-click the PPTX file in My Documents, it will open
just fine in PPT. Go figure.
I didn't realize you could actually Save As DOCX in Word. It's really not
necessary, though, as PPT 2007 can open files with the PPT extension. Is
there a reason you want to create PPTX files using PPT XP?
With Excel, I can see the XLSX file in File | Open (with "file types" set
to "Excel files" -- I don't have to change to "all files"), but the file
doesn't open correctly. It will if I double-click it in My Documents,
though.
I don't see an option to Save As PPTX or XLSX or any other 2007 formats in
either program.
In Word, I don't see the DOCX when I use File | Open -- I have to switch
to "all files." But it does open the file just fine, and it also opens if
I double-click in My Documents. I do see a DOCX and DOCM options when I
use File | Save As in Word 2003.
I'm not sure why they'd be designed this way, but I suspect the Save As
options are indeed "by design."

Hello
OS: Windows XP
App: PowerPoint XP
I have downloaded and installed the MS Compatibility Pack
[FileFormatConverters.exe] . I can now open/create Word 2007 DOCX
documents
etc. However, I cannot see any of the 2007 Converters in PowerPoint or
Excel.
Has anyone any ideas why they are not displayed?
Regards
Mike
