I am using W2K. Everytime I open a pp slide show, it runs without sound and
crashes upon exit. I get the blue screen that says process has locked page
and dumping. Doesn't happen on my other computer with W2K and powerpoint
2002. This happens whether I save the file to open or open from the email.

We're seeing a number of what seem to be media-related crashes lately.

Is there any chance you've just upgraded to Media Player 11? (seems unlikely,
in that your on Win2k, but I thought I'd ask.)

ok, Steve, i did all my updates, which i really thought i had previously done
and thought automatic update would have done. i no longer get the blue screen
of death upon exiting a ppt presentation( at least for today and 10 ppt
presentations later that were downloaded from emails). howver i do not get
the sound. i know there is sound because i can download it completely on
another computer with windows vista. almost there, but not quite. where to go
from there?

Do you have access to the sound file itself, external to PPT?

If so, start Sound Recorder, open the sound and see if it plays there.

if i do have access, i don't know where to look for the file. i just download
from the email link and save and then open in ppt2003. all i know is that
there is sound when downloaded and played in other computers. i also tried
opening it in realplayer, again, with no sound.

I'm confused ... what did you open in RealPlayer? It won't open PPT files.

Ask whoever emailed the file whether the sounds are linked or embedded. If
they're linked, you'll need to save them to the same folder as the PPT itself,
most probably.

Also if you have RealPlayer installed on your system, 9 times out of 10 it
changes the MCI settings so that PowerPoint cannot play sounds
