PowerPoint 2003 picture inserts

I started a new presentation and inserted pictures / photographs and then
saved as ----. When I re-open up my new presentation some of the pictures
that I have just inserted are shown as a white oblongs with a red cross, the
same size as the pictures just inserted. What has gone wrong?
Urgent help please.
