Powerpoint 2003: pasted Excel and Word ranges not shown

Powerpoint 2003 does not display a range of Excel and Word
ranges, which I copy/paste as picture or as pasted link on
the slide. Same is true when I open PPT from older
versions in Powerpoint 2003. In any case the content is
shown.

If you copy and paste as a picture, a picture is what you get. There's no link
for it to display.

If copy and paste normally, you create an embedded object; again, there's no
link.

If you want to see the links, you have to *create* them. ;-)
After copying content in Excel, choose Edit, Paste Special, Link in PowerPoint
