Hello,
I am having a problem editing powerpoint files that were
created in both office 97, and Office xp. When I open the
presentation, I get the error "Presentation cannot be
edited because of a read-only embedded font." When I open
the presentation in either XP or 97, it opened fine. I
found that by going into the options menu, and un-
embedding the fonts and re-saving it, I was able to open
the presentation in Powerpoint 2003 and edit it with no
problems. I was wonderinf if there is a fix for this, or
if anyone else has this problem.

Thanks

There is no fix. It's our understanding that this is a new "enhancement"
added to Office 2003 due to a decision by the Legal Department of Microsoft.
You have found the only known work around. Congratulations! And, errr,
sorry the news isn't better.

Please register your wish for a change so that Microsoft knows that it's
customers are not happy with this "feature". To quote John Langhans of
Microsoft:

"If you (or anyone else reading this message) think that this capability
can/should be improved in PowerPoint (without have to resort to an add-in
or VBA), don't forget to send your feedback to Microsoft at:

http://register.microsoft.com/mswish/suggestion.asp

As with all product suggestions, it's important that you not just state
your wish but also why it is important to you that your product suggestion
be implemented by Microsoft. Microsoft receives thousands of product
suggestions every day and we read each one but, in any given product
development cycle, there are only sufficient resources to address the ones
that are most important to our customers so take the extra time to state
your case as clearly and completely as possible.

IMPORTANT: Each submission should be a single suggestion (not a list of
suggestions)"

Hi

I recently upgrade to PowerpointXP and now find that I can't edit my old files created in PP98 or PP2000 due to "Read-only embedded fonts". I tried the method mentioned which was to go to options menu and un-select the embed fonts option but the "save" command is always greyed out regardless of what I do. I can't edit, nor save the file

Any ideas how to overcome this? If not I will be forced to downgrade to Office2000 and ask my company not to upgrade to XP

Thanks

Do you mean that you upgraded to PowerPoint 2003? PowerPoint XP is 2002.
If it is PowerPoint 2003, the only known solution is to load the
presentation in PowerPoint 2000 or 2002 and do a "replace fonts" and resave
the file. The problem will be permanently resolved for that presentation
and it will then open just fine in PowerPoint 2003.

By the way, it is possible to have both PowerPoint 2000 and 2003 on the same
system. Install the oldest version first and then do a custom install of
PowerPoint 2003 and be sure to set it to retain the prior version. Install
them to separate folders and they will co-habitate nicely on the same
system. There are many good reasons to upgrade to PowerPoint 2003, so I
would recommend this approach.
